Visa Exemptions and Tourist Card
Most international visitors, including citizens from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Mexico, Russia, and many South American countries, do not need a traditional consular visa for tourist stays.
Instead, these travelers are required to have a Tourist Card (Tarjeta de Turista). The good news is that the cost of this card (typically $10 USD) is now generally included in the airfare for most commercial flights. This card allows a stay of up to 30 days for tourism purposes.
In addition to visa-exempt nationalities, anyone who is a legal resident or holds a valid visa (for tourism or business) from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, or the Schengen Area can typically enter the Dominican Republic for tourism without a separate consular visa.
Mandatory Travel Documents
Regardless of whether you need a visa or are exempt, all air passengers must comply with the following core requirements:
- Valid Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least the duration of your planned stay in the Dominican Republic. It is highly recommended that it be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date to avoid any complications.
- Round-Trip or Onward Ticket: You must have proof of an airline ticket for your departure from the country.
- E-Ticket (Electronic Entry and Exit Form): All passengers entering or departing the DR on commercial flights must complete the free, official electronic entry and exit form (known as the E-Ticket) online before their trip. This digital form combines the Traveler’s Health Affidavit, Customs Declaration, and International Embarkation/Disembarkation forms. A QR code will be generated upon completion, which must be presented to the airline and immigration authorities. Don’t forget to fill this out before you get to the airport! The standard 30-day tourist stay can be *extended for up to 120 days by applying to the General Directorate of Migration (Dirección General de Migración) in Santo Domingo although many simply choose to overstay their visa and pay the penalties which are not overly harsh. The amount of the fine is based on the duration of the overstay and is payable at the airport. As of the writing of this article these are the current overstay fees:
30 days to 90 days RD$ 3,500.00$60
3 months to 9 months RD$ 5,600.00$95
9 months to 12 months (1 year) RD$ 7,000.00
12 months to 18 months RD$ 9,100.00
18 months to 24 months (2 years) RD$ 11,200.00
24 months to 30 months RD$ 13,300.00
30 months to 36 months (3 years) RD$ 15,400.00
It is always crucial to check the most current and specific requirements with your airline or the nearest Dominican Republic consulate well in advance of your travel date, as regulations are subject to change. But needless to say, the Dominican Republic is an extremely welcoming Caribbean nation that welcomes visitors from around the world with open arms.
